A brief understanding of the production process of color box printing

02 Feb, 2026

1. Color box printing planning
The color box printing project is based on the theme of the design. For the printing method, the size of the layout, the subject of the printed product, the type of paper used or the number of colors printed, as well as the selection of relevant processing manufacturers, all need to be carefully and specifically examined. Only in this way can each production process be smoothly launched and a beautiful finished product be achieved.

2. Design and Production
Based on the packaging design concept, the copywriting, design, layout planning, etc. are carried out. This is the pre-processing procedure for completing the final draft. At the same time, photography and illustration drawing should also be arranged, and contact with various cooperating manufacturers should be made to coordinate the schedule arrangement of the production process, so as to make all elements concrete.

3. Completion of the draft
Based on the initial draft of the layout plan, the text, photos, illustrations, correct positions and correct colors should be arranged in sequence on the final draft paper or processed as an electronic document to complete the entire manuscript. Clear instructions on all special requirements for plate making should also be provided. This is the preparatory work before plate making.

4. Production Output and Plate Making Operations
After the final draft is completed and enters the plate-making process, the images are scanned and separated using an electronic color separator, while the text and lines are photographed with a black-and-white camera. The correct screen count is determined, and the text, illustrations, etc. are assembled according to the instructions on the final draft. Then, the plate-making process is carried out, followed by the color proofing and sending it back to the designer for proofreading. If the electronic final draft is used, the negative film needs to be output at the output center. It is essential to fill out the output work order or instruction sheet in detail, clearly indicating the number of lines to be output, as well as the number of color and single-color pages, whether there are characters and specifications quantities, etc. To avoid communication errors and unnecessary losses.

5. Proofreading Assignment
This is the final step before printing, which is to check whether the color proofing conforms to the instructions given on the final draft. When making color corrections and other revisions, it is essential to be extremely careful and write specific and understandable textual explanations or position outlines using red ink. This should be clearly communicated to the plate-making personnel to avoid unnecessary losses.

6. Printing operations
The corrected four-color mesh is then exposed onto a printing plate, which is then sent to the printing machine to start the actual printing process. To obtain the ideal printed product on a color box printing machine, one must first understand the printing factors. As there are many variable factors involved, they have a significant impact on the printing quality. Therefore, a certain and adequate understanding of these factors is necessary.

7. Binding and processing operations
Brochures, catalogues, pamphlets, etc., commonly known as DMs, are the final step in color box printing. It involves binding and processing. Generally, for single-page flat designs, the most commonly used processes are cutting, creasing, and folding. As for binding, it depends on the number of pages, the type of paper, the level of sophistication, and the purpose and method of use.
